Famous tattoo artist and reality TV show star Kat Von D has finally decided to speak out on the whole “Underage Red” lipstick scandal. In an open letter to both fans and critics Kat shared via Facebook on Thursday, March 19th, the world-renowned artist stood up for herself and her brand.

The controversy surrounding the name of her matte red lipstick began earlier this week after a customer took a picture of the product, and then accused her of “promoting sexual misconduct and promiscuity” to her younger fans. The picture spread like fire to every corner of the internet.

In the statement, Kat Von D started off by saying that she feels the need to tell the real story behind the name, and that she understands why some people may be offended. However, the letter is definitely no apology.

The artist went on to detail how she first fell in love with bold red lipstick at the age of 16, even though her parents felt it was inappropriate to wear it at that time.

She then spoke about her current lifestyle and fiercely disregarded any possible possibility of a dubious story behind the name: “It has NEVER been a goal of mine to inspire sexualization of any sort, let alone a destructive lifestyle. Anyone who knows or follows me, is very aware of my personal lifestyle choices which include celibacy, sobriety, conscious living and (above feminism), human rights. Although, I would never force my views and opinions onto others, I most definitely find it offensive being accused of the opposite. So, no. I refuse to sacrifice my integrity and creative freedom. No, I will not be pulling ‘Underage Red’ from my collection. And no. This is not an apology.”

The LA born tattoo artist said she felt the comments online, which implied that she was promoting “the degradation of women, statutory rape, sexual behavior, human trafficking, underage drinking, or even idealization of fleeting youth” go against everything she stands for, and that she won’t be apologizing for something that has absolutely nothing to do with the truth.
