Emmy-nominated actress Jayne Meadows (nee Cotter) quietly passed away of natural causes on Sunday, April 26th, at the impressive age of 95. The seasoned actress was best known for her role on the once immensely popular TV series High Society, as well for her work on the popular game show I’ve Got A Secret.

Meadows truly led a truly interesting, eventful life. The actress was actually born in China, as one of four children, to missionary parents – the Cotters. She returned to America in the 1930’s. She first rose to fame somewhere in the 1940’s, and she continued to be one of the biggest on and off screen talents that ever grassed both stages and screens.

During her career, which spanned for more than 50 years, Meadows appeared in Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, and Undercurrent, which also co-starred Katharine Hepburn. She was nominated for three Primetime Emmys between 1978 and 1996, for Meeting of Minds, St. Elsewhere, and High Society. Meadows also won the prestigious Susan B. Anthony Award and the International Platform Association Award.

Jane Meadows was married to former Tonight Show host Steve Allen, whom she met on the set of I’ve Got A Secret, until his death in 2000. The pair had one son, Bill Allen. She also had one sister, Audrey Meadows, who was also known in the acting world for her role as Jackie Gleason’s wife on The Honeymooners.

Bill honored his mother in a touching, open letter: “She was the most loving mother and grandmother I could ever imagine. She was not only an extraordinarily gifted actress who could move audiences from laughter to tears and back again all in one scene, but she was the greatest story teller I have ever known, and I will miss her endlessly fascinating and frequently hilarious anecdotes about her life and the many brilliantly talented people she worked with and befriended along the way. She will be sorely missed and never forgotten.”
